The Panchang is Indian Vedic calendar, that has been used for centuries.

Years before the evolution of the modern English Calendar, ancient Indian scholars devised a comprehensive calendar by systematically studying the Vedas and the movement and positions of planetary bodies and stars. This calendar was prepared in the form of an almanac called the Panchang.

The word Panchang is derived from two Sanskrit words Panch (meaning 5) and ang (meaning aspect). The panchang measures time in lunar months; and takes into account the five aspects of the day :

  • Tithi : One Tithi equals 12 degree difference between Moon and Sun.

  • Nakshatra : One Nakshatra equals 13 degrees:20 minutes. There are 27 Nakshatra in 360 degrees.

  • Yoga : One Yoga equals 13 degrees:20 minutes. There are 27 Yogas in 360 degrees.

  • Karana : One Karana equals 6 degree difference between Moon and Sun.

  • Var : the seven weekdays.
